The server list
mccompanion.net/servers is a directory of Minecraft servers, Java and Bedrock alike. Anyone can browse it, whatever you play on.
What makes it different from other server lists is where the numbers come from. We ping every server ourselves, every 30 minutes, and publish what we saw. The player count next to a server is what we measured, not what the server told us.
On top of that, console and Bedrock players can reach any server in the list through the MCCompanion app, the Java ones included, using Java Mode.
How a server ends up on the list
Two ways.
We saw it. The list grows out of our own relay traffic. When someone opens a server address through the app, that address goes into the directory. Nobody has to sign up for this, which is why most listings have no owner.
Someone added it. You can add your own server from the panel. It is checked straight away, so the server has to be online, and it stays off the list until you have proved it is yours and pressed publish.
:::info Two rules limit what appears We do not list bare IP addresses, only hostnames, so a server on a home connection is not published. And a server drops off the list if we have not seen it online for 30 days. It comes back on its own when it returns. :::
Claiming your server
Claiming means the listing becomes yours: you can write the description, add a banner and links, set tags, switch on vote rewards, and take it off the list.
- Sign in and open Panel → Servers
- Press Add a server and type the address players use to join, without a port
- If it is already in the directory, that is normal and fine: it just goes onto your account as a pending claim
- Prove the server is yours, in one of two ways
- Fill in the listing and publish it
Proving it, with DNS
Best if the server runs on its own domain. Your players never see anything, and the record can stay where it is.
Add a TXT record with the name and value we show you, save it, wait a minute
or two, and press check.
Proving it, with the MOTD
Best when you cannot change DNS, for example on a hosted subdomain.
Put the code we give you anywhere in your MOTD, reload so it goes live, and press check. You can take the code straight back out afterwards.

If someone already holds the listing
Then the claim button is gone and there is a mail link instead. A listing with an owner is not transferred by proving control, because a paid Featured spot is attached to the listing and a silent takeover would hand it to someone else. Mail us and we move it over.
Publishing, hiding and removing
Everything below is under Panel → Servers → your server → Listing.

| Delete | Permanent. Your banner, icon, description, links and tags are deleted, and the listing does not come back, not even when our relay sees the address again. |
The list is cached for two minutes, so a change can take that long to show up.
Getting off the list without an account
You do not have to sign up to be removed. Mail [email protected] from any address and tell us which server, and we take it off. No proof of ownership needed.
That removal is permanent in the same way: the listing does not return when our relay sees the address again, and we stop querying the server altogether.
If you later change your mind, claiming the server with DNS or the MOTD brings it back under your control.

Nothing here is taken from what a server reports about itself. That is the whole point: the numbers on your listing can be trusted by the players reading them.
